BIRDS DON'T TAKE THE TRAIN, BUT WE DO

Artistic retire for slow-paced collective explorations

Artist-In-Retreat is a yearly proposal that the artist Xenia Klein runs every year at her cottage in the province of Blekinge [SE]. In 2021, she invited us, a diverse group of artists based in The Netherlands, to retire together for a week in the fall of 2021. In those days, we laughed, we talked, we thought, we reflected, we cooked and explored the area together, discovering local stories and traditions.

On our coming back to reality, we worked together to produce an exhibition in a box that would contain pieces of our experience in different formats and interpretations: photographs, videos, paper birds, paper houses, posters, sound recordings, a cookbook, a compilation of illustrations and a publication containing a reflective text of the process from each participating artist.

My contribution was a paper model of the cottage we stayed together and a pocket cookbook that collected the recipes that we shared those days.
